Syncrolite News : The Pope
The Popes visit to St. Louis posed a difficult problem for designer Troy Eckerman, the stage was massive with multiple levels-altar, backdrops, choir areas, seating for dignitaries, orchestra and the ceremonies area. The traditional solution required flying 1500 conventional instruments off 2000 truss with 30-40 hanging points. Troy opted for only 16 SX3K Skylights flown off the catwalks in the St. Louis Dome 200 downstage and 100 high with 4 SX7K Skylights for backlight. With a creative use of silks, diffusion and frosts in the gel scroller area, Troy gave the TV people a perfectly flat field over the entire set in excess of 100 foot-candles. Jim McClellan, VP of Contemporary Productions, was very pleased at this method which saved many production dollars and did a perfect job.
