Dubai Grand Opening of Atlantis, The Palm
Syncrolite’s high powered Xenon fixtures, Grucci’s multi-million dollar fireworks display, and VLS projectors projecting animations by Marie-Jeanne Gauthe lit up 43km of shoreline illuminating the man-made palm shaped island of Palm Jumeirah in Dubai.
Syncrolite crew included: Jeffery Smith - Lighting Designer/Crew Lead, Cory Fitzgerald - Lighting Programmer, and Syncrolite lighting techs Eric Braudaway, McClain Moss, Steve “Scooba” Sligar, and Micah Andrews. Equipment used included: 32 Syncrolite XL10s, 14 SXB-5/2s, 8 SXB-5/2 HPs, 18 SXB-5/3s, 16 MX3000s, 3 Universes of DMX with 3 W-DMX transmitters and 7 W-DMX receivers, a GrandMA and a GrandMA Light running as a back-up.

Pre programming for the show took place in New York at Prelite and lasted about 5 days with the various elements of the creative team. Lighting programmer, Cory Fitzgerald, used a GrandMA for programming, and a GrandMA light as a backup. Thanks to the rigorous and detailed pre show planning, each department (party, décor, pyro, video, lighting, etc…) ran fairly autonomously for setup, but worked together giving advice and feedback to fine tune the looks for the overall show.

Several of the fixtures required special scaffold and pipe constructed to angle the fixtures so that the light beams cleared the top “cap” of the walls of the hotel. During the week prior to the big show, with the rig up and running, changes and updates were implemented as they came down from the hotel staff and creative staff. The crew would start before dark to get the rig running then work through the night to get the looks and timing right for the cues.
